As most of you are reading this, I’m celebrating my birthday, Sunday July 8, 2018. I’ll be 63. Odd to think of myself as this age.
This photo of me as a toddler shows I’ve always had my very curly hair!
My life feels as if it’s a long book with many chapters. Sometimes it feels I’ve lived different lives.
Celebrating my birthday, as I look back over my life, it’s fun to feel wise, as I remember everything I’ve learned and lived through. Yet, I also feel like I have so much more to learn.
What about you? Do you think of your life like this?
I still feel in lots of ways as if I’m in my 30’s. My son and daughter are now almost 36 and 34. It seems like yesterday that I was those ages.
One thing that’s changed from my younger years until now, is how much more relaxed I am about life, people, relationships and myself.
I’ve written about the years I didn’t really love myself and about the conscious exercise I did each day, looking in the mirror, saying, “I love you”. Lots of moments were spent crying as I looked in that mirror. It’s taken many years to really appreciate myself and the choices I have made over the years.
Some choices I have wished I had a do-over for.
Many other choices I have made, like taking care of myself physically now, for 44 years, have certainly paid off. Learning about the importance of being healthy, eating healthy and thinking healthy thoughts, during my first personal growth class back in 1974 in Toledo, Ohio, where I grew up, have meant so much.
A couple I met in this class owned a health food store and restaurant. Their classes I took on nutrition and cooking healthy foods, taught me about taking good supplements and drinking healthy water as well.
In this personal growth class I learned how to meditate. I meditate most afternoons. It helps me to regroup, relax, release any tensions or negativity I may have. Many years ago I added in using a chi machine. It helps get my chi energy flowing throughout my body. In 1992, I first learned about how important it is to have my chi energy strong, when I began receiving monthly acupuncture from a Traditional Chinese Medical Doctor.
During this same period of time, I began getting regular chiropractic adjustments and massage. All of these things I continue to do to this day. Working out 4-5 times each most weeks now for over 36 years has been a choice I’m so happy I made. I’m not able to work out as hard as I did in the younger years, only it’s been a part of my life I truly enjoy.
Celebrating my birthday this year, my only wish I have, is to spend some time with Hale, my daughter Abby, who’s flying in from NYC, my son Adam, his wife Laura and their two little children, my younger grand kids. Our older grandchildren are at the cabin this week.
Presents aren’t very important anymore. Cards I love to receive and see what people write, especially my kids and Hale. Spending the precious, rare time with my little family is what I cherish.
To my wonderful parents, I give thanks for all of the important values you taught me and for your love and support you’ve always given me.
Thank you to Hale, for being there for me always and loving me. Thanks to my three sisters and my brother and your families, all of my amazing friends and to all of you who read my articles each week!
The appreciation I have for all of you warms my heart.
Celebrating yourself will help you to live a life you love. My hope is you will take the time to do it.
With love and gratitude,
Connie
