Family fun time is important. Have you heard this, “families that play together, stay together”?
First, as I grew up and now as an adult, my family of origin, plays cards and board games.
Since I’ve experienced this statement above to be true, we have carried it on with our grandkids.
Of course the two youngest are only 3 and 4 1/2 years old, so playing board games hasn’t happened yet. Additionally, playing what ever it is they have interest in, together, is important.
However, the other 4 grandkids have played board and card games, with me and Hale.
“Farkle”, the dice game. is a good one to begin with.
We’ve had one of the older kids keep score. It really helps with their math skills too.
Furthermore, I’ve found you really get to know a person by playing games together.
Their sense of humor may come out more easily or you may see their competitive spirit.
Basically in this day of screens, smart phone, iPads and computers, I’m sure you’ve experienced less human connection.
With family fun time becoming a conscious choice for you and your family, I guarantee your connection to each other grows.
For example, my two oldest nieces, are in their 50’s now and have adult children and a couple grandkids.
Over the years, they have set aside a family game night.
Also, the females are now playing monthly Bunco, the same as their mom, me, my sisters and friends did back in the day!
Just recently, I set a family fun day aside on a Saturday, beginning in the morning.
You see our 3 year old grandson still takes naps, so we needed to work around it.
Consequently, we went to one of the many indoor play parks we have here in the Twin Cities.
In the past, all of our grandkids have enjoyed this same place. We so miss our oldest grandson, Gavin, who is living in Columbus, Ohio now since last fall.
Since our oldest granddaughter, Phoebe is in college here and works part time at a near by restaurant, we went there afterward for lunch.
The kids enjoyed seeing Phoebe working, even if she was so busy she wasn’t able to talk much to us.
As it turned out, that Saturday was sunny and 75 degrees here! Beautiful!
Since Elijah needed his nap, I stayed here with him and grandpa Hale took the other 3 kids to the outdoor playground near our home.
The family fun time continued after his nap, as they brought their squirt guns to use outside, on this warm day.
This was actually at the beginning of Liv and Reid’s spring break, so their dad, my son, Adam, had an evening at Great Wolf, the indoor waterpark planned.
Even more fun was in store after Phoebe got off of work, she came for dinner. Elianah and Elijah adore her. Lots of leggo building and then fun bath time Phoebe helped with.
I love the innocence of the younger kids.
Once they finally settled down for sleep, they both slept all night and didn’t wake up at the crack of dawn!
Hale made a new homemade pancake recipe with bacon and eggs as well.
By 10:30 am, Sunday, both the little ones were ready for their mommy, my daughter, Abby, to come get them.
I’ll include a collage of some of the photos from that day below.
Here’s to enjoying each other and consciously playing fun games together.
With love,
Connie
