Determination, faith, support, perseverance and grit are essential for success.
Once again, my inspiration for this article came after my yoga class.
Since, the instructor always speaks about an inspiring topic she relates back to practicing yoga, I listen closely.
Consequently, she spoke about Fernando Gabriel Mendoza (born October 1, 2003), an American college football quarterback for the Indiana Hoosiers.
Mendoza previously played for the California Golden Bears, before transferring to IU in 2025, where he won the Heisman Trophy, among other awards. He went on to help his team achieve the National Championship, the school’s first.
Mendoza is outspoken about his Catholic faith and incorporates daily Mass in his game day routine as well as coordinating team Bible studies on campus at Indiana. He credits them for building camaraderie among himself and his teammates.
First, it took perseverance, determination, faith and grit to win the first ever IU’s National Championship.
To understand how improbable Indiana’s 16-0 season was, it takes a history lesson.
You see, IU lost 715 games, the second worst in football history. The 27-21 National Championship was won against Miami, with so much grit.
Because my yoga instructor also shared it takes self-determination to achieve success of any kind, Mendoza definitely had it.
He inspired his fellow teammates to have it as well.
Hence the support part of being successful.
Plus, he shared his faith with them and encouraged them to find it too.
Likewise, with yoga, my instructor relayed. It takes all of the above, to continue growing in success, using your breath, when you’re practicing yoga.
These important qualities are beneficial for living a life you love and enjoy.
To grow into determination and perseverance, consider the following strategies:
- Be Mindful of your interests: Focus on activities that excite you and create a sense of passion.
- Set small goals and pace yourself: Regularly take small steps toward your goals to foster consistency and accomplishment.
- Learn from past mistakes: Look at some past things that went wrong and how they could be improved upon.
- Change your approach: Experiment with different solutions to overcome obstacles. Don’t be afraid to try new things and ask for support when needed.
- Establish a support system: Surround yourself with supportive people who believe in your goals. This will help you to stay committed to your journey.
- Practice patience: Understand that progress often takes time. Celebrate even the smallest accomplishments. This helps maintain your motivation to move forward.
What are your thoughts?
With determination, perseverance, faith and grit,
Connie
